The sunshine at the weekend prompted a friend to propose that we should have a day trip and do something different from our usual leisure pursuits. She had read an advertisement for the Watercress Line heritage railway line which was rescued by volunteers in the 1970’s and has over the years become a much loved tourist attraction in southern England. It runs via four stations in about ten miles of Hampshire countryside, and you can buy a ticket which lets you hop on and off as many times as you choose during the day.

After we got to bed extremely late the previous evening, we aimed to leave by noon so that we could get the train that was due to leave at one o’clock. Different trains are pulled by steam locomotives and the others by diesel engines, and we wanted to make sure that we caught one of the steam trains.

We set off from the station in Alresford. The station building has been perfectly done out in pre-second world war design, and all of the friendly staff are wearing smart costumes. In fact, most are not contracted staff, but are a number of the volunteers who are so crazy about trains and railways that they make use of their leisure time being a supporter of the team who take care of the many of folk who visit whenever it is open.

Onwards from Medstead and we have arrived in Alton, the final stop, although this station is also served by South West Trains, so you can jump on the mainline train to London from here. We have a brief stretch of the legs on Alton station platform and then get back on the train for the return journey which departs about fifteen minutes later.

The trip back to Alresford is a little more eventful as the steam engine at the head of our train has been experiencing problems all day long and finally gives up completely in spite of the best efforts of the crew to keep it moving. So a diesel engine is sent out to take both the steam engine and the carriages back to our start point. So we were part of the rather rare experience of riding, not just on a steam train or a diesel train, but by both types of engine on the same journey!

The Watercress Line does a great job of remembering the old fashioned railway network, and to be honest, the old trains have bags of charm when held up against the streamlined rolling stock that we travel on these days. But then sentimentality is always great fun to those who long for the ‘good old days’.

To be honest, I can get both attitudes. A steam train is wonderful fun for a Sunday afternoon spent with friends, but if I want to go into London in a hurry for my work, I’d much sooner trust the high speed train link that can get me to St Pancras in under twenty minutes at speeds faster than one hundred miles per hour. Likewise, I’d choose to hang on to my automatic washing machine instead of having to rely on a washboard and a mangle, given the option I’d opt for Laser eye surgery rather than wearing glasses which keep getting grubby and can get damaged easily, and I would certainly much rather keep in contact to people by email than be made to hand write all of my letters.

But of course, there are plenty of people who lived during the days of steam and probably long for the friendly service they got back then. One male believes that life would be so much more straightforward if we could just return to using paper and pen for everything (he is also the kind of person who says that DVDs are a bit new-fangled and keeps using his decrepit reading glasses rather than invest in Laser eye treatment), and another male uses a computer for work and therefore refuses to use one indoors. A married couple state that they could never use Facebook because it frightens them too much (yes, really!), and one female mostly uses eBay to spend her partner’s money, but doesn’t even have a personal email address and shares her son’s address instead. And these are individuals who are too young to be a target for this campaign!

On the other hand, consider my neighbour, aged 79, who asked me if I’d seen the vehicle that had been parked over the road for a few days, and then advised me that since she’d been concerned, she had done a Google search to find out if the company was real and what the company did, and when she had done so, worked out that they were clearly doing some work in the empty house across the street.

A relation of mine, who is also aged 79, runs her life on her computer.
